LightEdge First in United States to Launch Microsoft Exchange 2010 SP2 on Hosted Platform

Company utilizes upgrade to simplify multi-tenant unified communication service offering

Des Moines, IA, February 21, 2012 – LightEdge Solutions, an industry leading cloud IT services provider, today announced the refresh of its Hosted Microsoft Exchange platform utilizing the highly anticipated 2010 Service Pack 2 upgrade.  LightEdge is the first to bring this new, inherently multi-tenant, version to market.

“Service Pack 2 makes standing up a multi-tenant Exchange environment much simpler for a managed service provider like LightEdge,” said Mike McHenry, vice president of engineering. “The ease of implementation translates to fewer engineering hours needed to set up the platform, which leaves more time for the product team to develop value-added features like single sign-on and integration with Lync.”

Previous versions of Microsoft Exchange were developed for single site implementations, making it more difficult for service providers to utilize the leading e-mail and collaboration platform in a shared, multi-tenant environment. Service providers, like LightEdge, had to spend additional resources on enabling the platform for multiple customers and ensuring that features like Public Folders and Unified Messaging worked correctly in a shared implementation.

LightEdge has utilized Microsoft Exchange as the hub of its Unified Communications-as-a-Service platform since 2004.  Gartner included LightEdge in its UCaaS Magic Quadrant in 2009 and 2010.

Through the Service Pack 2 refresh, LightEdge has increased the maximum mailbox sizes to 25GB and has added Encryption and Archival solutions for business customers with sensitive information such as finance, medical, legal and insurance records.

Iowa in running for $1.2 billion data center; is it Facebook? Apple?

It could be Apple. It could be Facebook. It could even be the U.S. government that’s considering Iowa for a $1.2 billion data center, say industry experts.

“It’s all very cloak-and-dagger stuff,” says Clyde Evans, West Des Moines’ economic development leader. The city, already home to a $200 million Microsoft center, has fielded interest recently from three or four site selectors looking to locate large data center projects. “We get contacted by a real estate agent, they won’t give us a card or a last name. We never know who they represent.”

Nebraska lawmakers, who are pushing through incentives they hope will match Iowa’s data center tax breaks, call the proposed mega-center “Project Edge,” according to the Omaha World Herald. Debi Durham, Iowa’s economic development leader, confirmed Thursday that Iowa was competing against Nebraska for the data center, but declined to name the company behind the project.

She told the Associated Press it wasn’t the massive high-tech companies already in Iowa, like Microsoft in West Des Moines, Google, with a $600 million data center in Council Bluffs, or IBM, with a $42 million high-tech hub in Dubuque.

LightEdge Solutions signs lease in Kansas City area LightEdge Solutions, drawn by Google, signs lease in Kansas City area

A Des Moines-based information technology company with its eyes on Google Inc.’s incoming ultra-fast network has selected a permanent sales office space in Corporate Woods in Overland Park.

LightEdge Solutions Inc.  has signed a three-year lease for roughly 2,500 square feet at 9393 W. 110th St., effective April 1.

Four employees will move into the office in April, but LightEdge, which is spending $40,000 on space improvements, plans to hire about six more employees for the location, marketing director Scott Riedel said.

Jennifer Carroll of Stoltz Management, which runs Corporate Woods, represented both the landlord and tenant in the transaction.

LightEdge entered the Kansas City market in September as a way to test a new company model for metropolitan locations.

The company, which needs a lot of bandwidth to provide managed IT and cloud computing services, identified Kansas City because of the 1-gigabit broadband network Google is building in Kansas City and Kansas City, Kan., and because of its proximity to LightEdge’s Iowa headquarters.

The company, which has built data centers in Des Moines, Minneapolis and Moline, Ill., tentatively is planning to build a data center in Kansas City — a potential investment of $18 million to $20 million — if customer needs warrant more data center space.

In the meantime, LightEdge is leasing local data center space from 1102 Grand LLC in Kansas City, where it plans to access the Google Fiber network.

Partnering with Strength – LightEdge’s relationship with Cisco

CiscoStarting with a complete refresh of our network switches in 2006, LightEdge has standardized on Cisco gear for devices related to our managed services and more recently for the UCS platforms that we base our Virtual Server infrastructure on.  Over the past year, however, LightEdge has executed on a strategy to get closer with Cisco and become one of their most important partners both relates to the devices that we use in our data center and the devices that we sell through our consulting department.

Getting close has its price.  We’ve hired a dedicated vendor liaison to manage our relationship with Cisco, and have been through several business audits with Cisco analysis teams.  Today LightEdge is one of only 11 Cisco Cloud Providers in Infrastructure as a Service and a Cisco Premier Reseller.  Clearly the results are worth the effort that we have put in as our Cisco device sales grew incredibly over 2011.

Cisco has clearly had a great year, based on their recently announced earnings.  Read more about Cisco’s earnings

Google helps spur LightEdge Solutions to use Kansas City as test market

Alyson Raletz Reporter – Kansas City Business Journal

Iowa-based information technology company LightEdge Solutions Inc.  has identified Kansas City as a test market where it will develop a new model for future metropolitan locations.

Among the reasons LightEdge picked Kansas City are its proximity to the company’s Des Moines headquarters, its mix of businesses and the coming Google ultra-high-speed network.

“Our managed cloud IT services require accessibility and bandwidth,” LightEdge Solutions Chairman and CEO Jim Masterson said in an email. “Google’s presence will help enable the adoption of the service model that we are promoting.”

LightEdge focuses on managed IT services, collocation space in data centers, cloud computing and reselling IT hardware. It had roughly $25 million in revenue in 2010, Marketing Director Scott Riedel said.

In addition to Des Moines, the company has offices in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Omaha, Neb.; Minneapolis; and Moline, Ill.

The company’s owner, Anschutz Investment Co., which Denver industrialist Phil Anschutz leads, targeted Kansas City as a place to build up infrastructure plus a sales and marketing force that LightEdge aims to duplicate in the next 18 to 24 months in other markets. Anschutz founded Qwest Communications International Inc., which sold last year to CenturyLink

10 things to save your IT department time & money

As the economy continues to yo-yo with market gains on one day being wiped out the next, many companies are looking for ways to stretch their IT dollars – either to keep what they have running well or to adopt new models (such as cloud computing) to consolidate and virtualize.

In the past few months, we’ve used (and tweaked) a presentation related to costs savings.  This was presented as a webinar and more recently as a breakout session for the Iowa Bankers Association.  Both times the crowd requested the presentation to review and study.  Since it has been so popular for us, we’re making it available to download.

We think that there are good takeaways from this presentation, and are always willing to discuss them in more detail with your company.

Cisco CallManager/Unified CallManager Support

Through our recent Cisco Advanced Unified Communications certification, LightEdge is now proud to offer solutions and services based on Cisco Unified Communications Suite, including Unified Communications Manager, Unity, Cisco Presence and Unified Contact Center Express. We have created several options that we feel will be well received in the market – from very small companies looking for a turnkey solution to enterprise level companies looking for advanced features and the ability to administer the entire system efficiently.

  • Shared/Hosted – this is the simplest and most turnkey offering. Unified Communications Manager hosted in a multi-tenant shared environment similar to our HostedPBX offering. In this model, your company utilizes CallManager as a service for a predictable monthly cost and no upfront costs for software licensing or server hardware.
  • Dedicated/Hosted – in this model, the customer purchases the necessary licenses (or uses existing licenses) and moves the platform to the LightEdge virtualization environment. The advantage being a centralized platform based on redundant Cisco UCS devices within a secure data center with multiple power options and having the option to run whatever version or modules that you wish.
  • On-Premise – for larger companies with their own data center, the on-premise option gives the flexibility and control of keeping the platform onsite and can offer the ability to integrate with other applications that are hosted on-site. In this instance, LightEdge can help you with as much or as little as you need. From purchasing a Cisco UCS device to procuring Cisco licensing to installation, troubleshooting and future maintenance.

If you currently have Cisco CallManager or any product in the Unified Communications platform, please consider the Voice-over-IP professionals at LightEdge for your maintenance contract. We have a strong alliance with Cisco, and are dedicated to offering the best IT services based on our Cisco network.
